Just sold a custom box on Etsy

I have been spending alot of time refining and learning how to do my Etsy Shop lately. One thing that I've found is that there are alot of people who want custom orders. The box above is a custom order that a lady in Kansas ordered from me last week. She wanted this particular type of flower on the box, and I worked out a pleasing design for her, that she liked. She was giving the box to her mother-in-law as a gift. I had fun doing the box, and it was kind of a challenge to come up with a pleasing design. Fortunately, she gave me free reign to come up with a pleasing design and didn't put a whole lot of restrictions on me. She was very easy to work with and I hope we do business again someday. I've done so many flowers that I thought I would try something different on this box. I put a couple folk figures on it and created a folksy type box. I don't know if this kind of thing is popular, but when I take it to our next craft show in November I'll find out. I want to welcome people coming to my blog from my daughter's blog Pumpkin Patch Quilter. It is really nice of you all to come here. I haven't been keeping up with Etsy like I should have. I have been busy selling lawn furniture I make. ( I had one fellow order four Adirondack Chairs from me and that kept me busy for awhile making them.) I made the box pictured above about a week ago and thought I would post it here for you to see. I did a similar one in green. I will most likely sell it at a Craft Fair, but if you are interested in it just send me an email and I will quickly post it on Etsy. This box was inspired by my daughter who loves to quilt. I put Irises on the top and tried to make it look like a quilt. My sister says it looks American Indian, but I don't think so. Anyway for more photos of it go to my Etsy Shop where I posted it yesterday.

I just posted these two boxes on Etsy. I am trying to get good photos of the boxes, but it isn't easy. I am taking a class next week in Digital Photography and hopefully I will learn some ways to take better pictures. I put these photos on my blog to keep my daughter and friends informed. But my daughter is so busy raising two small children (with a third on the way) that she doesn't get much time to go on the computer and visit my blog. A Small Blue Box with Violets . . .

I've done so many hexagon boxes lately that I thought I'd better do some conventional shaped ones. This small blue box is my newest addition to my Etsy Shop. It is lined with a lovely powder blue panne velvet and the violets are outlined with an antique gold paint. I have never done a box like this, so I will see if it sells or not. My wife likes it, but then again she likes everything I do.

I haven't posted anything on my Blog in a couple months because I have been busy making decorative boxes. I set some of them up at a small craft show where my wife works and did fairly well selling them. I also put some on display in their gift area and sold some more after the show. Back in the Saddle Again . . .

I haven't made much the last few months. I was kind of uncertain what to make. I decided I didn't want to make boxes, and kept hoping something new would pop up. About a week ago I made two chairs like these pictured above. They sold after being out by the road for only 5 hours. So, I decided to make a couple more. They are not an original design as I found the patterns in a woodworking book, but I did give them a weathered look which I kind of like. I am doing a small show in August and thought I'd take a few and see if they sell.

A few years ago, I made alot of boxes that I took to some craft shows. The shows I picked were not good ones, so I didn't sell many boxes. I haven't given up, though. I am thinking about selling boxes again. I made the box above over the weekend. I borrowed the picture idea from Donna Dewberry. I am going to practice some of her ideas until I get better at making pictures, and then I will do my own compositions. The photo above is a little blurry, I know. My camera does a terrible job on close ups. The box still needs to have the hardware installed and a lining put inside, but I wanted to post it anyways. I'll be interested in comments on it.

2 x 4 Furniture Can Be Fun!!!

I didn't design this bench. It is a pattern from a 2 x 4 furniture book that I bought at the local co op for a couple dollars. 2 x 4 furniture is simple furniture you build using standard lumber dimensions. I didn't build it to impress anyone, but to sell. I made another one just like it that I left the hearts off of, and put the two benches out by the road to see if they sell. I have had some people stop and price them already. I am asking $60 for this bench, and $55 for the one without hearts. I didn't think that was very much money, but a few people gagged at the prices. There is a danger when you put stuff out by the road in that people tend to think the stuff should be sold at yard sale prices. Not everyone acts that way, but alot of people do. I also designed, built and painted a coffee table to go with the round red table below that has roses painted on it. It didn't turn out very good, so I broke it up and put it in the garbage.

A Country Inspired Bench . . .

I made this bench a few weeks ago. I gave it a weathered look, because I couldn't think of anything else to do to it. If I painted it in colors it would tend to look kind of circusy rather than country. My daughter put the seal coat on it and she said she didn't care for the bench. Oh well, you cannot satisfy everyone.

I finally got this table painted in a pleasing manor. I painted it three times before this. I figured out how to do simple roses and decided to put them on the top of the table. I think it came out ok. I will be anxious to hear what my daughter has to say when she sees it. Below is a picture of the top of the cabinet. I am almost done, except for some touching up and a seal coat.

A Country Bench . . .

I haven't made anything but stuff for around the house over the last couple months except this country bench. I finished it up yesterday. Thanks alot to my daughter Valerie for painting the black part of the bench . . . she is a very neat painter and does a good job. I still need to put a sealer on it, but other than that it is done. The scene I painted on the back isn't as light as it appears in the photo . . . that is the best shot I could get of the bench with my camera. At least you can kind of get the idea of what it looks like from the picture. I don't care if this bench sells right away or not . . . I had fun making it and that is what counts, having fun doing it. I am presently working on a round lamp table and will post that as soon as I get it finished.

Something Different . . .

I had some difficulty getting a photo of this bench. Since it is black, the details tend to disappear. The style is a little different than I have done for this piece in the past, but I think it turned out kind of nice. I am trying to concentrate more on the overall design of the decoration than on technically perfect painting. The idea for this came to me in a dream. I decided not to cover the whole piece in leaves, but just do a couple selected areas. The design seemed to need the black spaces.

A Shelf for Joel...

A friend of mine asked me if I could make him a small shelf in the shape of the Chevrolet Bow Tie Logo and this is what I came up with for him. He said he would paint it if I made it, so it is shown here unpainted. It is just big enough for him to put a few Matchbox cars on the level areas. I had fun making it for him, but the angles to cut the wood were really difficult to figure out. He wants me to make a few more things for him and I will post them when I have them completd.

The other day I decided to make things from now on that I like to make and not worry about selling them. I want to have fun, instead of always thinking of a way to make a buck.

A Really Wild Recipe Box!!!

Here is a pic of the Recipe Box I just finished painting. The photo is a little dark, but it kind of gives an idea of what it looks like. I really had fun painting this box. I have one more that I made last summer that I am going to paint next.

Finally Made the Move -- Farewell Co op!!!

Well, last Saturday my daughter and I moved my stuff out of the Co op and brought it home to my house. I hemmed and hawed for many months as to whether I should stay or leave. I would change my mind 20 times a week. I finally made my decision last Friday, and made the move Saturday morning. Thanks Val for your help . . . I couldn't have pulled out without your help.

I will still make stuff to sell, but am going to try Craft Shows instead. Crafts didn't really sell all that well at the Co op, although I sold the black Kidney Shaped Bench and another brown bench last week. It seems that plain ones sell there real well -- the ones with painted flowers sit there for ages and ages.

I am working on a Recipe Box and hope to post that in a day or so. I made the box last summer and have finally got around to painting and finishing it.

Mary Engelbreit -- Eat Your Heart Out!

Here are two views of a small stool I made (only 6-1/2 inches high) and painted in the Mary Engelbreit style. I am going to try to sell it at the Co op -- yes, I decided to stay at the Co op a little longer. I really enjoy painting in this style and have a few more things I am going to do this way to see if they sell -- including a Recipe Box, my next project. Well, I don't have any projects to report on that I have been working on lately. It seems like nothing I take to the Co op sells. I guess I'm feeling pretty discouraged. My daughter took the Latchmaker Table and put it in her living room -- I'm glad she likes it. We put two of the flower benches in the living room rather than give them to the Salvation Army.

I have decided to pull out of the Co op this week. We are just not making enough money at it to make it worthwhile. So, as soon as I make something I will post it on this blog. My daughter is the only one who reads it, so I guess I don't really need to hurry, as I can tell her on the phone what I am up to.

Back to Basic Painting

I didn't like the way I painted the kidney bench (see last post) so ended up painting the whole thing black. I think it looks better this way. I also painted the little white footstool that had forget-me-nots on it -- I painted it a deep red. The footstools weren't selling painted with flowers, so i am going to try just painting them solid country colors. If they sell, then that is the way I will paint them from now on. I figure that simple colors will appeal to alot more people than the flowers. I am going to take these two to the co op tomorrow and set them out and see if they sell.

A New Look for the Kidney Bench

Well, after a few unsuccessful paint jobs on the kidney bench and a few weeks of sitting at the co op with no buyers, I decided to give it a new look.

I did the top in a faux finish and painted the bottom of it black. It looks better than in the picture at right, though. My benches with painted flowers just don't sell all that well, so I have decided to try some experiements. This is one of my experiments. I will be interested in hearing your comments Val.

A Kidney Shaped Bench

I haven't made anything new in the past few weeks so that is why I haven't posted anything here. I have mostly been buying stuff for resale for our booth at the Co op. A few days ago, Nora (my friend Harold's wife) loaned me an old kidney shaped bench that she had out in their garage. I used it for a pattern and made this one shown above. It still needs painting and decorating, but I just had to post it now. It was very difficult to build -- in fact I had to tear it apart and start over three times!! I hope to finish it off in the next day or two and I will post the finished product when it is done.

This is a special thanks to my sister, Elaine, for all the work she did on painting Adirondack chairs for me last summer and this summer. She painted over 30 chairs, and many footstools and tables. Elaine isn't painting for me because she said painting really wasn't her thing. She said she would paint Adirondack chairs for me if I get any orders, but I took down my sign and have decided to discontinue with them. So, Valerie said she would paint for me and she is doing a tremendously good job. Well, Elaine, thanks for all the work you did. I really appreciate it.

A Small White Footstool with Forget-me-nots

Here is a little footstool I painted Forget-me-nots on this afternoon. Valerie base coated it white yesterday when she did the one below. I need to touch it up a bit, but otherwise it is done...except for the seal coat of poly. The picture is pretty terrible and doesn't show the flowers off at all . . . they have little orange dots in their centers that don't show up at all in the photo. Oh well.

Well, here is the footstool all painted up that I showed in my last post. Valerie sanded, sealed knots and painted the base coat on the bench. It was her idea to put strawberries on it too. I painted the strawberries. The picture is a little fuzzy, but that is just my camera. I think overall the bench came out pretty good. Valerie also painted a table and another bench for me. I am going to listen when she suggests ideas for painting.

I made this footstool this morning for my new helper to sand and put the base coat on. She is going to start helping me next week and I am getting some stuff made for her to work on. It will be interesting to see how this footstool comes out after it is all painted up. My helper will just put base coats on at first, but eventually, if she is interested she can paint some flower decorations on the stuff as well. In case you haven't guessed, my new helper is my lovely daughter Valerie. I know her first love is quilting, but hopefully maybe she will learn to like to paint stuff also as a sideline. Who knows what the future may bring?

A Round Table

Here Val, is my latest creation. I had a real difficult time getting a picture of this table. Even the one I show here isn't very good ... the table isn't as squat as it appears here. The green is pretty close to the right color and so is the pink/red of the flowers. The table didn't take that long to make . . . the hard part was working out the pattern. I made the pattern from a picture I saw of the table. It took some finagling to get the dimensions to come out right, but I think it came out OK.

A Knotmaker's Table

I made this table in about an hour and it took a full day to finish. There are about 8 steps to getting the finish to look this way. I was trying an experiment in making new stuff look old, and kind of had to make up the process as I went along. I took the table up to the Co op this morning and put it out for sale. It was originally called a Lacemaker's Table, but I don't like that name much and have decided to call it a Knotmaker's Table.

A Wall Cabinet that is Antiqued

old. It is a wall cabinet you

hang on the wall and put stuff in. I still have to put a coat of poly on it to finish it. I am going to try it at the Co op and see if people buy this type of thing. If they do, I can do more antiqued stuff, and if they don't, well, I will have to make other stuff.

A Real Nice Chair Order!!!!

Here is a picture of my most recent order for chairs. The lady ordered two chairs, two footstools and a table. It took me about 4 days to pull the order together. My wonderful sister painted all the pieces here and did a real nice job!!

I charged the lady a small fee to deliver the set as she lived quite a distance from my house and I had to haul the load in two loads as it all wouldn't fit in my van.

I'd like to get an order like this every week!!

The Yellow Bench I Made

I told Val I would post a picture of the yellow bench I made. Here it is. I put white flowers on it and they look better in person than they do in the photograph at the right.

I have been selling these benches for $35 but my mother and wife say I should increase the price to $45. I'm afraid to do that as I may price myself out of selling them.

I tried to give up the Adirondack Chair business but a lady stopped yesterday and ordered two chairs, two footstools and a table, and I didn't even have my sign up out by the road --- I had taken it down. I guess I have to make the chairs whether I want to or not. I like the money though.

A New Post -- Finally!!!

Well, this is the first Post I've entered in my blog in a couple months. I have been busy building things, but just haven't got around to posting stuff. My daughter says she wants to see the stuff I make, so in alot of ways I am posting the stuff for her to see.

Here is a picket bench I made that seemed to be popular. The first one I gave to my daughter as a gift because she wanted one. I sold two more of them and gave a fourth one to my mother.
I would make more, but they take alot of wood to construct and it is difficult to get wood lately, as this is the height of the construction season.

I have curtailed the Adirondack Chair business for awhile. I have made 34 of them and am a little burned out on them. Instead, I am concentrating on products to sell at a nearby Antique and Craft Co-op.

One thing that seems to sell well at the Co-op are large benches. I showed one a few Posts back that had purple flowers on the top. I just made one that I painted with the flowers seen above. I also made a yellow one with white flowers, but it isn't pictured here.

Well, that's all for right now. I will make another post in a few days.

Second Attempt at Folk Art

This is my second attempt at Folk Art painting. I used an Early American Design. I have a problem with the brushes though -- they don't want to come to a point when I make the comma strokes. If anyone out there who reads this has any suggestions as to how I can get the brushes to come to a point, I would appreciate the comment. Maybe my paint is too thick or the brushes stink.

A Floral Footstool

Here is the large red footstool I posted a picture of a few weeks ago, redesigned. I think it looks better. The flowers aren't as purple in the real thing as they appear in the photo, though. The green actually is pretty close to the original. I put it in front of the white cabinet to give a better idea of the scale of it. I would appreciate any comments on it.

I painted over the junk I painted on the footstool below and tried my luck at Folk Art. I have alot to learn about painting the flowers and on design, but I really enjoyed doing this. I hope there is a market for this sort of thing.

A Table Sized Footstool!!

Another Footstool

Here is another footstool I painted up. I just put decoration on the top instead of all over. It has a creek with some small water falls in the distance and some trees and stuff like that. This is the first one I've ever done with a scene on it and hopefully I will get better in the future. The picture is kind of blurry, but I think it gets the idea across.

The green in this photo is too green. The actual color is much softer than this. I don't know why my camera distorts colors so much. The whole table is about 20" high, so it is quite small. I'm not very good yet at decorative painting, but if I keep working at it maybe one day I will get good at it. Anyways, I am putting this on for my daughter to take a look at -- she is about the only one who checks out my blog anyways!!

This is my first entry in my blog. I am hoping to meet people like me who like to make things out of wood to sell. Here is my most recent product, Adirondack Chairs. I have sold 23 of them this summer as well as footstools and tables to go with them.

I really enjoy building them, but I hate painting them. I get my sister or my wife to paint them for me as I get drips and globs all over the place.
